July 1, 2026
Work on the Wilcox cemetery on N. Tyner Rd in Smithville has progressed well since we first began in May. A post and board fence was constructed by C&B Landscaping LLC, Oxford NY and the metal gate was refurbished by Iron Rod Services LLC, Maine NY. The "Patriot" sign honoring Job Wilcox, a Revolutionary War soldier, was also installed recently and the gravestones in the cemetery have been uprighted, cleaned and put back together by Dale & Tina Utter. The Town has had the cemetery mowed. Please take a look at the before and after pictures to see what a great improvement this project has made for our area. A celebration honoring Job Wilcox's military service will be held July 25th @ 11am at the cemetery. The Public is invited and welcome to attend.

A huge thank you to those who have contributed to this project in any way. We are still collecting funds for the incidentals at Wilcox cemetery and for the Tyler stone at Knickerbocker cemetery. Please consider contributing either by check (made payable to the Smithville Historical Society, P.O Box 176, Smithville Flats, 13841 ) or by stopping by the Smithville General Store or the Town Clerk's office where there are cans available for drop off donations. We thank the Public for their help and support on these projects!

Any overage in donations collected will be applied toward resetting the gravestone of 3 yr old Melvin Tyler, (son of Harry and Eunice Tyler) in the Knickerbocker Cemetery. Melvin's stone was missing for over 50 years and was discovered last fall for sale on Facebook Marketplace. Through diligent efforts on the part of many people it was recovered from the Putnam County, NY area. A special ceremony to dedicate his recovered stone will be held later in the summer.
